Tesla is set to launch a fleet of driverless robotaxis in Austin, Texas. However, safety advocates have raised serious concerns about the technology, citing alarming blind spots that could endanger children. CEO Elon Musk announced the launch dates but admitted to being overly cautious about safety. Critics, like Chris Womack from ResistAustin, argue that Tesla is rushing the development process. Demonstrations conducted by activists revealed that the vehicles failed to stop for school buses, repeatedly crashing into a child-sized mannequin used in tests, prompting calls for a halt to the rollout.
Tesla has obviously been taking shortcuts in developing this technology. Musk is releasing a new hazard onto Austin streets, and should halt it immediately.
Instead of stopping before the school bus as intended, the Tesla failed to recognize its flashing lights and sign and barreled down the road.
Volunteers set up an experiment by placing a Tesla Model Y in one lane and a school bus in the other, demonstrating the technology’s failures.
Musk was 'being super paranoid about safety,' he explained, but some Texans feel he isn't being paranoid enough about the impact of robotaxis.
