"Here's the reality in 2025: you can lose your job with no warning. I've worked in tech for the past four years, and during that time, I've witnessed thousands of layoffs and reorganizations. I have friends who have been laid off two to three times in a single year. One day, you're happily employed, the next, you can't log into Slack, your key card no longer works."
"A year from now, it may be hard to remember who that colleague was who told you that you were the best project manager they ever worked with. Keep track of those networks now. Record the names and contact info of colleagues you've worked with, along with a few notes on how you worked together. Connect on LinkedIn as well."
Layoffs can occur without warning, as shown by Amazon's planned cuts of up to 30,000 employees in 2025 with 14,000 already let go. Employment can end abruptly, leaving workers locked out of systems and notified by HR. Prepare by making layoff-readiness a regular habit every month or two. Build and document professional networks, saving names, contacts, and collaboration notes and connecting on LinkedIn. Save evidence of accomplishments such as executive shoutouts and performance reviews. Record metrics and results to populate résumés and interview examples, and keep the résumé current and accessible.
