Briefly

Dear Vicki: As a jobseeker, should I rely on LinkedIn, or is it still all about who you know in Ireland?
"Q: I recently took a redundancy package, and I am now job hunting. I've been told that LinkedIn is the place where I am most likely to find prospective employers, and have dutifully changed my avatar to "open for work". However, I have a feeling that Ireland is still all about "who you know", and I may do better by working my network of contacts. Is it worth paying for a full LinkedIn subscription, or what is your experience of modern job hunting?"
"A: Redundancy can feel daunting, but it's also an opportunity - a moment to pause, rethink your direction and approach the jobs market with a little more strategy than emotion. Most people instinctively turn to LinkedIn when job hunting, while also leaning on the contacts and relationships they already have."
Redundancy can feel daunting but also provides an opportunity to pause, reassess career goals and adopt a more strategic job-search approach. LinkedIn functions as a common, visible platform where many people start their job hunts and signal openness to work. Personal networks and warm introductions remain highly valuable and can produce better outcomes than algorithm-driven outreach alone. Combining an active online presence with targeted, relationship-based outreach increases chances of finding suitable roles. Paid platform features should be considered only if they align with a clear, practical job-search strategy.
