""The consistency of this trend raises important questions about the assessment of candidates for the demands, context and complexity of a Fortune 500 general counsel role.""
""That is not to say external hires cannot succeed but rather that companies need to be thoughtful about the dynamics to learn from the mistakes of others.""
""In the case of mismatch, companies are demonstrating far less patience and moving more quickly to make leadership changes.""
A report reveals that over half of general counsels hired in 2025 were external candidates, a shift from previous years. 58% of new appointees were new to the role, attributed to a limited pool of experienced candidates. In 2025, 67 general counsels left their positions, with 31% departing within three years. Most short-term departures involved external hires. Cultural mismatches and transitions to larger companies were common reasons for leaving. Companies are increasingly quick to make leadership changes in response to these mismatches.
