Why the words in your job posting may attract rule-bending narcissists
Briefly

A recent study published in Management Science by researchers Scott Jackson, Nick Seybert, and myself explores how job postings using 'rule-bender' language attract candidates with narcissistic traits. Terms like 'creative solutions' and 'persuasive communication' appeal to narcissists, who view themselves as innovative and risk-taking. In contrast, 'rule-follower' language resonates with candidates who prefer conventional methods. The research highlights the need for awareness among hiring managers about the implications of their language choices in attracting potentially problematic candidates, especially in fields like accounting where rule adherence is crucial.
Our study shows that using 'rule-bender' language in job postings often attracts narcissistic candidates who thrive on creativity and rule-breaking.
Job postings containing terms that imply innovation and persuasion can lead to hiring individuals with a tendency to bend the rules, which might not be ideal.
