An example of the positive effects that can come from moving to remote work is customer service employees in the Philippines. The average commute time to and from work in the city of Manila is 3 hours. Meanwhile, the average commute time for remote workers is 3 minutes. Imagine getting back 3 hours every day.
We found that the remote managers were rated slightly but not significantly more positively than those managers working in the office. The data showed that not all managers working remotely were viewed as effective. The bottom quartile score for the least effective managers was 13.7, while the top quartile score was 88.1. If grades were assigned, those bottom quartile managers would be given an 'F' while, on average, those in the top quartile would be given a 'B+'.
