The 2018 Farm Bill has inadvertently allowed the rise of intoxicating hemp derivatives like Delta-8 and Delta-10, which mimic the psychoactive effects of marijuana. These products, often accessible in retail settings without age restrictions, have been linked to numerous emergency cases, especially among youth. Reports show concerning health impacts, including hallucinations and hospitalizations. The unregulated nature of these products results in inconsistent labeling and potential contamination, leading to rising incidents of poisoning and health emergencies reported to poison control centers between 2021 and 2022.
Many analyses show that Delta-8 products contain mislabeled THC concentrations or are contaminated with potentially harmful substances, in part because they are produced in unregulated labs.
Between January 1, 2021, and May 31, 2022, 10,448 cases involving edible products were reported to poison control centers. Of these, 77% involved people 19 and younger.
