Welcome to the top of the world': the Pituffik US space base in Greenland
Briefly

JD Vance's delegation will visit Pituffik, the US's northernmost military base in Greenland, recognized for its strategic missile detection capabilities. Located in a highly isolated Arctic region, it remains accessible by air, despite being ice-locked for most of the year. Established during World War II, its military presence has evolved and plays a crucial role in monitoring missile threats and debris from space. Approximately 150 personnel collaborate with Danish and Greenlanders, reinforcing the site's strategic importance amid changing geopolitical dynamics.
As well as being the US's most northerly military base and its only one on the vast Arctic island, it is also among the world's most isolated places.
For nine months of the year, the base is locked in by ice, although it remains accessible by plane throughout the year.
The strategically important site plays an essential role in US missile detection and monitors space for debris.
The US moved in during WWII to set up airfields and weather stations while watching for German submarines in the North Atlantic.
