The drivers are now set to negotiate collective rights, supported by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union – Local 1518. Union representatives noted priorities for negotiations include health and safety compensation and potential benefits for drivers. The certification process spanned nearly a year, requiring drivers to organize and support one another to sign union cards various challenges were noted due to the nature of gig work.
"By and large, they include things like health and safety compensation, exploring whether or not there's a possibility of benefits, and things that would ... form a regular part of a collective bargaining agreement," said Pablo Godoy, UFCW Canada's director for emerging sectors.
Godoy noted that, given that summer is underway, there could be an influx of drivers in the provincial capital, which is a factor during union negotiations.
