The U.K., Belgium and Germany have done it. Should Canada also privatize its postal service? | CBC News

"I'm not sure you can do any tweaks," said Vincent Geloso, an assistant professor of economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. He suggested that making minor improvements isn't enough, asserting: "The best you can do is make them suck not as bad. That's essentially it. There's no way around that." He argues that the optimal solution would be to "just go down the route of selling it off," highlighting a need for a more radical approach.
Despite some suggestions for operational tweaks at Canada Post, like less frequent mail delivery and focusing on parcel services, Geloso believes drastic measures are in order. He finds the current situation grim, noting, "Even before the month-long strike by more than 55,000 postal workers, the national mail service had been under the spotlight for its grim financial situation, and it could run out of operating funds in less than a year."
Canada Post's financial struggles are substantial, with losses totaling $3 billion over the past six years, including $748 million in 2023 alone. The company has blamed its downturn on decreasing revenues from letter delivery, even as package volume has increased. Geloso's view resonates in an industry where other companies facing similar challenges would innovate or be sold.
