'That ain't good': Fisherman recounts harrowing helicopter rescue from drifting ice on Georgian Bay | CBC News
"While we were fishing there was a large crack across the ice and it separated. When we tried to run along the crack to find a way to cross, due to the high winds it separated too far [and] we couldn't get back. The closest his crew could get at the time was about 15 to 30 metres from shore, which was too far to swim."
"The ice drifted out about two kilometres and split into several sections, which caused some people to become partially submerged in frigid water. A large crew of first responders were called to the scene, including the OPP's aviation and marine units, alongside firefighters from multiple nearby departments and paramedics."
On Sunday afternoon, 23 people became stranded on a chunk of ice that separated from Balmy Beach near Owen Sound, Ontario. Fisherman Kevin Fox and others were unable to return to shore after a large crack formed across the ice and widened due to high winds, leaving them 15 to 30 metres from land—too far to swim. The ice drifted approximately two kilometers into Georgian Bay, splitting into several sections and causing some people to become partially submerged in frigid water. Ontario Provincial Police received calls around noon and responded with two helicopters, along with firefighters and paramedics, to conduct rescue operations that successfully airlifted all stranded individuals to safety.
