In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's heightened border security demands, RCMP officers in Windsor, Ontario, have begun extensive 12-hour patrols along 800 kilometers of border coastline. Constable Ian Smith, among over 40 officers, emphasizes the focus on detecting illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. Despite limited success in early cold months, the patrols aim to deter crime. Collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police has increased resources and efforts, underlining the necessity for a reinforced, unified approach to border security for both Canada and the U.S.
"We're looking for anything suspicious in regards to people or contraband, drugs, commodities coming into Canada or leaving Canada illegally," said Smith.
"A more co-ordinated, Team Canada approach that includes more boots on the ground is the only way to detect, deter and disrupt illegal activity, and ensure the safety and security of Canadian and American communities," said Ontario Provincial Police.
