Ontario track star Tamarri Lindo allowed to stay in Canada after deportation threat, lawyer says | CBC News
"We are absolutely relieved that the Lindo family has now been granted status. They can now remain in Canada without having to worry about a deportation order," Simardone said. "The parents can focus on, of course, the daily life goals that we all have, and Tamarri Lindo can focus on, of course, his Olympic dream. That is a huge relief for him. In all of this, the public has played a huge role."
"In a voicemail message to CBC News on Friday, Simardone said the IRCC decision followed public pressure. More than 1,300 people had signed an online petition, organized by the advocacy group Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, urging the federal government to stop a deportation order issued for the family. Simardone said pressure on the federal government came from people who signed the petition, shared the story on social media and contacted politicians about the case."
The Lindo family from Jamaica has been granted Canadian permanent resident status, allowing them to stay in Canada. The decision affects 21-year-old track athlete Tamarri Lindo, his parents and three siblings. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada informed them on Thursday that they will be allowed to remain. Public pressure, including an online petition with over 1,300 signatures organized by Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, contributed to the outcome. Immigration lawyer Aidan Simardone said the family can now live without deportation fears and that Tamarri can focus on pursuing an Olympic dream while his parents attend to daily life goals.
