North Idaho College has successfully lifted its show cause status and retained its accreditation after addressing governance issues that emerged under a hyperconservative board majority. Concerns included attempts to oust the president and violations of state open meetings laws. Recent board elections have removed the problematic trustees. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities acknowledged NIC's improvements and granted an additional year for any remaining compliance issues to be resolved. NIC President Nick Swayne expressed optimism about the institution's future and the recognition of their efforts.
NIC has worked to resolve governance issues over the past year and the three trustees that comprised the majority are no longer on the five-member board following elections in this past fall.
The college community has been awaiting a decision on NIC's fate since January, when administrators made their case to the commission about why NIC should not lose accreditation.
