New Zealand woman and six-year-old son released from US detention
Briefly

Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son were held for more than three weeks at a US immigration center after attempting to re-enter the US from Canada. Upon attempting to return home after dropping off her two older children, Shaw experienced a harrowing detention. She received a frantic call from her father just before being taken away in an unmarked van by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. A friend described the ordeal as terrifying and barbaric, while officials stated that the detention center is designed to meet family needs.
She went to go back across into the US and then I got a frantic call to say that she's being detained and they're about to take my phone off me and they're locking me up for the night.
They didn't really explain anything to her at first, they just kind of quietly took her and her son and immediately put them in like an unmarked white van.
It had been a terrifying and barbaric ordeal for her friend.
The Dilley detention center is retrofitted for families. Adults with children are housed in facilities that provide for their safety, security and medical needs.
