The couple was arrested on March 4 after arriving in Cancun for a vacation where their passports were flagged, following a dispute over $117,000 in charges.
Family lawyer John Manly stated, "Make no mistake, what they're doing is they are holding two Americans hostage because they want them to pay them money."
Barrett visited the Mexican state of Quintana Roo to assist in the negotiations for the release of the Akeos, who were being imprisoned without bond.
