The Maplehurst Correctional Complex is currently facing outbreaks of invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS) and influenza A, affecting both inmates and staff. The union representing employees noted that several workers have required medical attention due to the outbreaks. Health authorities are coordinating with the Ministry of Health to manage the situation, emphasizing the seriousness of iGAS, a disease that can escalate from mild symptoms to potentially life-threatening conditions. Public Health Ontario has highlighted a concerning rise in such infections over the years.
