A letter sent to a police station in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in August 2025 warned of attacks across Canada and was described in court during a deportation hearing. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, designated a terrorist entity in Canada last year and operating in the US, UK, Australia, and the UAE, claimed it had upwards of 1,000 individuals willing to carry out shootings. The letter framed extortion as “taxes” and threatened violence if Canadian businesses refused to pay. Canadian police are investigating the letter’s origins and contents amid an extortion crisis targeting the South Asian community, while authorities allege the gang continues operations from prison in India despite being jailed since 2015.
