April Hubbard, a 39-year-old performance artist, has been approved for assisted dying in Canada, despite not being terminally ill. Suffering from spina bifida and debilitating tumours, her chronic pain has led her to seek this option. April feels her quality of life has diminished significantly, and she wants to spend her last moments in a comfortable environment, surrounded by loved ones. This reflects the changing attitudes in Canada towards the assisted dying laws, which now allow individuals to end their lives under certain conditions, even if they are not terminally ill.
I want to be surrounded by the people I love and just have everybody hold me in a giant cuddle puddle and get to take my last breath, surrounded by love and support.
My suffering and pain are increasing and I don't have the quality of life anymore that makes me happy and fulfilled.
