Janelle Oombash spearheaded a broomball tournament in Cat Lake First Nation, Ontario, to promote social interaction among local youth. Broomball, resembling hockey but played with a ball and specialized shoes rather than skates, is integral to the community's culture. However, increasing temperatures have reduced playable ice time, making such events less frequent. Oombash noted that climate change not only affects recreational activities but also places pressure on Indigenous rights and traditions, highlighting the importance of communal sports in building connections despite these challenges.
These boys here, you would never see them talk. But in broomball, they can play together. They get along very well.
Cat Lake has no indoor arena, affording them only a few weeks of ice each winter... It's disappointing.
