The Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) plan is a pivotal issue for many Canadian parents in the ongoing federal election, especially as it impacts daycare fees. Initially launched in 2021, the programâs five-year extension promised increased provincial funding and aimed to stabilize operational costs. Despite broad provincial support, Alberta and Saskatchewan have yet to join the initiative. With upcoming elections, the programs' future under different political leaders remains uncertain. While Liberal candidate Mark Carney supports expansions, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre's conflicting statements raise concerns about the program's sustainability going forward.
In the past few weeks, we have been working with our provincial and territorial partners to make sure that families can rely on this system, to become something that no government, a year from now, five years from now, twenty years from now, could ever go back on.
The program has proven exceptionally popular among Canadians, with one Reddit user stating it significantly reduced her childcare fees from $2,400 a month to $480.
Liberal leader Mark Carney's platform touted the program's benefits-and pledged to add 100,000 new spaces by 2031-but questions about how he would improve or expand it remain.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre made confusing and sometimes contradictory statements about the plan, suggesting he would eliminate Liberal bureaucracy while also honoring existing agreements.
