Food Banks Mississauga braces for Thanksgiving amid city's food insecurity emergency | CBC News
"People who access food support, they are needing it more frequently, they're relying on it longer and it's taking them a longer time to get back on their feet,"
"We had the fastest-growing rate of food bank users in the province and the number of visits continues to grow with each passing year,"
"For every dollar people give, we're able to provide food for one meal. So if folks give $100, that's 100 meals for those who need it in the community,"
"We continue to call on governments to increase incomes for people so they can buy food, pay rent and do the things they need to do to live a life of dignity,"
Food Banks Mississauga launched a Thanksgiving drive as use of its services climbed beyond a record year, with almost 49,000 people making more than 503,000 visits. Annual visits increased by 20 percent this year, and the organization aims to raise $800,000 to meet continued need. Cash donations are emphasized because one dollar provides one meal and allows rapid access to fresh, healthy food. City leadership formally declared food insecurity an emergency and reports a fastest-growing rate of food bank users in the province. Non-profit leaders report unprecedented levels of need and call for higher incomes and government action on affordability.
