Dozens of community members, advocates, and city officials gathered at Nathan Phillips Square to demand urgent action to end gun violence after eight-year-old JahVai Roy was killed by a stray bullet in his North York bed just after midnight. Organizers from the ENAGB Indigenous youth agency held a rally with sage burning, prayers, story-sharing, and flag-signing to honour the child and maintain his legacy. The group launched a petition calling for bail reforms and parental accountability under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Speakers emphasized rehabilitation, restorative justice, and inclusion of Indigenous perspectives. Mayor Olivia Chow called for stopping illegal guns from crossing the border and removing those already in the city.
"We really need to work on what rehabilitation looks like, what restorative justice is, and including an Indigenous perspective on all levels of those concerns," said Briar Rose Perrier, Toronto director of the ENAGB Indigenous youth agency.
"We need to stop them from coming across the border. Those that are already in the city we need to get rid of," Chow said.
