Anyone who paid a fee for their first checked bag on WestJet flights from October 2014 to July 2017 for domestic travel, and from January 2016 to February 2019 for international travel, can submit a claim. The settlement is valued at $12.5 million and will be distributed as travel credits. Claims must be submitted by February 10, 2025, and credits will expire after two years if not redeemed.
The B.C. Supreme Court approved a $12.5 million class-action settlement against WestJet for charging travelers for checked baggage when it shouldn't have. WestJet modified its domestic tariff language regarding checked bag fees following the lawsuit. The settlement funds will not be distributed as cash but as travel credits to eligible class members.
