"They are here to cry, they are here to mourn, they are here to grieve, and they are here to remember those who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom,"
"I am proud to stand with [them]."
"I'm asking for freedom for Iran and for all the Iranians inside and outside of Iran,"
A vigil took place at Vaughan City Hall to honor victims of nationwide protests in Iran. Vaughan's large Iranian Canadian community gathered, and Mayor Steven Del Duca described the community as heartbroken. Protests began in late December over a severe economic crisis and currency collapse and evolved into calls to end Iran's Islamic Republic, with some advocating a return of the monarchy. The Iranian government reports more than 3,000 deaths, while the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates over 7,000. The protests have faced a crackdown, internet blackouts, and calls for international accountability and freedom.
