Mark Carney, previously the governor of the Bank of England, has won the Liberal party leadership with a sweeping 85.9% of riding points, exceeding Justin Trudeau's 2013 victory percentage. Carney’s candidacy had long been anticipated after he shortened his term at the Bank to eventually return to Canada. His ascension comes at a time when the Liberal party is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, now close to 30% support following a period of stagnation. Expectations suggest he will soon call a federal election, cementing his mandate.
Carney's commanding win outdoes even that of his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, who won the leadership in 2013 with a little over 80% of the points.
Carney is now not only Liberal party leader but in the coming days will be sworn in as prime minister, with expectations of an upcoming federal election.
