Canada's Foreign Minister is requesting urgent information regarding the death of Johnny Noviello, a Canadian citizen found unresponsive in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Noviello had a history of drug trafficking convictions and was being detained pending removal proceedings. While ICE reported immediate medical intervention at the detention center, the surrounding circumstances of his death and the broader implications for U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration have ignited attention and concern among Canadian officials and citizens, especially in light of previous deaths in custody.
"Medical staff responded immediately and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator shock and called 911," ICE said in the statement.
In 2023, Noviello was convicted of charges including racketeering and drug trafficking in Volusia County, Florida, and sentenced to 12 months in prison, ICE said.
