Florida Rep. Byron Donalds welcomed Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman with a display of congeniality despite past criticisms of Canada. During their meeting, Donalds acknowledged the strong relationship between the U.S. and Canada, expressing optimism about ongoing dialogues with President Trump. Hillman, however, noted that the real discussions focused on the need to mitigate impending tariffs on Canadian goods during her two-day series of meetings with U.S. lawmakers. As she engages in assertive diplomacy, she underlined the importance of facts over niceties in negotiations with key political figures.
In a day of wall-to-wall meetings with U.S. lawmakers, the niceties aren't the most important part, said Hillman. People to your face most often will just say very nice things. That's why we have to get in there with the facts that matter to him.
Right now we have a great relationship with Canada. I think the president understands that and he wants to continue having a great dialogue with our neighbours to the north.
