Canada goes on offensive with US billboard 'education campaign': 'Tariffs hurt you more than us'
Briefly

Canada is implementing a strategic billboard campaign in 12 states of the US as part of its response to impending tariffs on Canadian goods scheduled to take effect on April 2. Canadian officials aim to raise awareness among Americans about how tariffs increase their grocery bills and to counter prevalent misinformation regarding trade. Despite skepticism from US lawmakers like Rep. Lloyd Smucker, Canadians believe this initiative can inform the public and influence perspectives on the trade war, demonstrating a bold and creative approach to international trade relations.
"We are launching ads in the US to make sure all Americans know that tariffs are taxes on everything they buy," Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly said on X.
The purpose is to increase the understanding of the American public and to counter misinformation," said John Babcock, spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, who put up the billboards.
Canada is free to spend their taxpayer dollars in whatever interesting ways they see fit, but I don't think billboards will influence the thinking of the hardworking dairy farmers of my district," said Rep. Lloyd Smucker.
"Hell hath no petty like the Canadians," said Floridian Kelly Kervin in a TikTok video, adding she had never laughed so hard in her life.
