After the U.S. presidential inauguration, Alberta business and oil leaders felt a mix of anxiety and relief regarding tariff threats on Canadian oil. Initially, there were hopes that tariffs would not be imposed, especially after President Trump's comments about drill policies. However, joy turned to disappointment when Trump later confirmed that 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods would be implemented starting February 1. This cycle of emotions highlights the unpredictable nature of U.S.-Canada relations in the oil sector under Trump's leadership.
"It's a bit of a reality check for sure. But, anyone who had this notion that it was gone was living in a world of magical thinking," said Deborah Yedlin.
"I think we'll do it Feb. 1," In response to a question about tariffs on Canada from reporters, Trump confirmed the 25 percent tariffs were coming.
