"For many Canadians, the cost of groceries and everyday essentials has been too high for too long. They need more support now," Prime Minister Mark Carney conceded on Monday morning, speaking at a grocery store in Ottawa, almost exactly a week removed from his landmark speech in Davos, Switzerland. The cost of food is no small thing. Indeed, for many Canadians it is the main thing. And for too many, the cost of food has become too much."
"The boost is an increase in the GST credit now styled as the "Groceries and Essentials Benefit" which is targeted toward Canadians on the lower end of the income scale. The bridge includes a number of policies to support businesses dealing with trade disruptions and boost domestic production. The government also says it is developing a national food security strategy, which will include measures to monitor and enforce competition in the food sector."
High grocery and essential prices have become unaffordable for many Canadians and require immediate support. The government will increase the GST credit through a new Groceries and Essentials Benefit targeted at lower-income households to provide short-term relief at the checkout. The package also includes policies to help businesses manage trade disruptions and to boost domestic food production as part of a longer-term bridge to food security and affordability. A national food security strategy will be developed with measures to monitor and enforce competition in the food sector. The Conservative opposition called the top-up ineffective and insufficient but said it would vote to implement the legislation.
