Tropical Cyclone Alfred, now a weakened storm, continues to threaten eastern Australia with heavy rains and dangerous winds. In New South Wales, significant flooding risks persist, especially after over 10 inches of rain fell in Dorrigo. While Brisbane largely avoided the brunt of the storm, Premier Chris Minns warned that the situation remains critical, with ongoing searches for a missing man. Emergency responders have conducted numerous rescues, and regions face evacuation orders due to fears of floodwaters overtopping levees, recalling past devastating floods in Lismore.
This emergency is not over...the rain is continuing and expected to keep falling in the days ahead, and wind conditions are very high and extreme.
Emergency responders...had carried out 30 flood rescues in the previous 24 hours, mostly of people in cars who had tried to drive through inundated streets.
More than 300,000 customers lost power in areas affected by the storm, according to the ABC, the country's main public broadcaster.
Dozens of communities remained under evacuation orders in an area known as the Northern Rivers region, including parts of Lismore.
