Michael Kauffmann, an ecologist and author, combines elements of both Dr. Seuss's Lorax and Once-ler in his perspectives on environmental conservation. Co-authoring a field guide titled 'California Trees,' Kauffmann and botany professor Matt Ritter cover all 95 native tree species in California, focusing on their environmental roles and cultural significance. The guide highlights iconic trees like redwoods and sequoias, as well as long-lived trees like the bristlecone pine. Kauffmann reflects on conservation efforts and the need for appreciation of these natural wonders.
We have the tallest tree on the planet and largest—the tallest is the redwood and the largest is the sequoia, Kauffmann said.
All 95 of the state's native tree species are covered, including California endemics not found elsewhere.
