Trump is trying to end birthright citizenship. Now, California is suing him
Briefly

Following President Trump's executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship, California's Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside 18 state attorneys general and San Francisco, filed a lawsuit. Bonta condemned Trump's move as an overreach of authority that threatens a longstanding constitutional right. He emphasized the potential impact on over 20,000 newborns in California annually, depriving them of citizenship and access to federal benefits. Bonta reflected on the historical significance of birthright citizenship and asserted that the legal battle regarding it has been conclusively settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.
"I am deeply disappointed that we are here one day into the administration and also not surprised," Bonta said in a press conference announcing the lawsuit.
"The president has overstepped his authority by a mile, and we are holding him accountable," Bonta said.
"Birthright citizenship is foundational to our nation's history, to California's history, to our very identity," Bonta said, adding that the legal battle over that right is 'done and dusted.'
Bonta said that birthright citizenship... is a 'longstanding foundational right' and that Trump's action sets 'a terrifying tone' for the rest of his term.
