Traffic gridlocked for miles along I-15 on California-Nevada border
Traffic was gridlocked along Interstate 15 on the California-Nevada border as Memorial Day weekend travelers returned from Las Vegas. The 18-mile stretch from Primm, Nevada to Mountain Pass, California took about 1 hour and 20 minutes shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, with southbound lanes crawling while northbound lanes moved quickly. The corridor often jams during holiday weekends because it is the only direct route between Las Vegas and Southern California. A coalition of California and Nevada labor and business leaders formed to fund an 18-month feasibility study into widening the roadway. The stretch is also described as highly dangerous, with more than 1,000 injury or fatal crashes between Barstow and Nevada from 2020 to 2024, and a death reported about every three days. Road conditions were directed to the Caltrans site.
"Traffic gridlocked along Interstate 15 on the California-Nevada border Monday as Memorial Day weekend travelers headed home from Las Vegas. The 18 or so miles from Primm, Nev. to Mountain Pass, Calif. was clocking in at about 1 hour and 20 minutes shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. Traffic cameras showed vehicles crawling along the southbound lanes while drivers in the parallel northbound lanes zipped by."
"For comparison, the northbound route on I-15 between Mountain Pass and Primm was taking drivers just 15 minutes at the same time of day. The stretch along the California-Nevada border often jams up during holiday weekends, as the artery is the only direct route between Las Vegas and Southern California."
"Late last year, a group of California and Nevada labor and business leaders formed a coalition to fund an 18-month feasibility study into widening the roadway. The Las Vegas Review-Journal also reported it's one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the two states; there were over 1,000 injury or fatal crashes between Barstow and Nevada between 2020 and 2024."
"The Review-Journal reported someone dies on that stretch approximately every three days. For the latest road conditions on Memorial Day weekend, visit the Caltrans site."
