Tens of thousand celebrate Diwali at Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton
"I love this celebration, because I have a lot of memories from India going to these kinds of events,"
"I have two kids. I love to bring them here so that they can learn."
"As a kid growing up, I always knew about all the other traditions. There was Christmas and Halloween. And now that we have this, we can learn about other cultures,"
"Good over evil, right over wrong, and knowledge over ignorance. Those are important right now. At a time when we are seeing from the federal government -- a lot of challenges -- attacks on our immigrant communities, on diversity, equity and inclusion,"
Fireworks over the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton marked a Diwali celebration attended by tens of thousands from across the Bay Area. Families experienced music, food, fashion, and cultural programming that connected them to memories of India and offered learning opportunities for children. Diwali commemorates the return of the Hindu god Ram and symbolizes light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, with different faiths observing related traditions. California Attorney General Rob Bonta attended and emphasized Diwali’s message amid political challenges facing immigrant communities and diversity efforts. Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan noted the festival’s growth as validation of the South Asian community’s presence.
