Taxpayers flood Napa Co. Tax Collector's Office after payments vanish in check fraud scheme

"We now have Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina. This network isn't just the Bay Area. It has tentacles throughout the nation."

The Napa County Tax Collector's Office is facing a crisis as property tax checks mailed to the office are being stolen and altered through check washing. Over 150 taxpayers have reported missing checks, with at least 60 checks cashed fraudulently across the country. Tax Collector Bob Minahen noted that many residents are unaware their payments were never received. The investigation involves the FBI, Napa County Sheriff's Office, and U.S. Postal Inspectors, as the thefts appear to be part of a larger national scheme.
