""We are investigating the incident to determine if there were any factors that would be considered criminal negligence," Ashley Quadros, a spokesperson for the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, said in an emailed statement to SFGATE. "It is a standard investigation. It is too early to know if criminal charges will be applicable, as the investigation is preliminary and remains active and ongoing. The District Attorney's Office would be the determining authority for any criminal charges to be filed.""
"Cal/OSHA, aka Division of Occupational Safety and Health, confirmed to SFGATE in an emailed statement Friday that it is "conducting an investigation into the avalanche incident involving guides employed by Blackbird Mountain Guides LLC near Castle Peak Mountain in Truckee." The agency does not have details to release about the ongoing investigation at this time, according to spokesperson Denisse Gómez."
Nine people, including three guides and six clients, were killed by a large avalanche while returning to the trailhead near Truckee during a three-day backcountry ski trip. The group included four guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides and 11 clients. Eight victims were found by rescuers on Tuesday and one person remained unlocated and was presumed deceased as the Nevada County Sheriff's Office shifted from rescue to recovery. Six group members survived and were rescued hours after calling for help. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office and Cal/OSHA have opened investigations to determine if criminal negligence or workplace-safety issues were factors; details remain preliminary.
