Snowmobilers trigger huge California avalanche, burying one
"A group of snowmobilers triggered an avalanche in a recreation area north of Yosemite National Park, burying one person, search and rescue teams said. Around 11 a.m. Saturday, the Mono County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team received a call for a D3 avalanche near Latopie Lake. A D3 avalanche is considered "very large," enough to wipe out a house and create a debris field 10 football fields long."
"Two helicopters were sent to the scene. A Battle Born Medevac helicopter out of Carson City, Nev., reached the location first. There, they discovered one person who had been "fully buried" by the avalanche, the sheriff's office said. The person had been dug out by the other snowmobilers and needed immediate medical care; they were airlifted to a trauma center in Reno."
"Mono County search and rescue wrote on Facebook that they "would like to remind the public that dangerous avalanche conditions exist throughout the county" after winter storms last week. Further south, an avalanche at Mammoth Lakes injured two ski patroller s on Friday."
