""Sometimes, the biggest levers we have for action come out of the courtroom," said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. "And as we work to tackle the issues our residents' care about the most, we need a champion willing to think outside of the box on homelessness, public safety and housing. After getting to know her, I believe Susana is that champion for change.""
""San José is a big city with big challenges - challenges that I am looking forward to tackling," said newly Wood in a statement. "It's a city that has always been on the forefront of innovation both inside and outside of city government and I'm excited to continue that legacy from the City Attorney's Office.""
Susana Alcala Wood will assume the role of San José City Attorney in November following Nora Frimann's retirement after five years. The city council unanimously appointed Wood after a nationwide recruitment and final interview. Wood has more than 35 years of municipal legal experience, starting as a law clerk in El Monte and serving in Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento, where she has been city attorney since 2018. She leads the City Attorney's Department for the League of California Cities, is president-elect of the International Municipal Lawyers Association, and served on the Attorney General's Statewide Reproductive Rights Task Force. The Office of the City Attorney provides legal counsel to the mayor, city council, departments and boards. Wood will be the third woman to hold the position and has identified homelessness, public safety and housing as priorities.
