"The skiers who died in an avalanche Tuesday in the Castle Peak area of Tahoe "cannot be safely extracted off the mountain," the Nevada County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The recovery mission is expected to stretch into the weekend. Eight of those skiers were located, and one is still missing, Ashley Quadros, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, confirmed to SFGATE on Thursday."
"Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon called the conditions on the mountain "horrific" in a news conference Wednesday. According to the Sierra Avalanche Center, the avalanche danger on Thursday remains high, with another round of snow and fierce winds expected to move in. "Large to very large avalanches" are possible, and the center is urging the public to avoid traveling in or near avalanche terrain."
An avalanche struck the Castle Peak area near Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, leaving nine people presumed dead and multiple survivors. Six people survived and were transported off the mountain and are expected to recover. Eight of the presumed deceased have been located; one person, Ashley Quadros, remains missing. Recovery operations were suspended Thursday because severe weather and hazardous conditions make extraction unsafe and are expected to continue into the weekend. Two men and seven women are among the presumed dead, including three ski guides, and identities cannot be confirmed until bodies are recovered.
