"Following an investigation, 24 city and district attorneys across the state filed a civil enforcement action. It alleged the makeup giant was mishandling damaged, returned and expired merchandise, which is considered hazardous waste according to state law. The complaint alleges that the company failed to determine which items that were thrown out were used, expired, recalled or damaged and didn't keep records of test results and waste management. The materials were also allegedly improperly managed and transported."
Sephora faces a $775,000 settlement for alleged improper disposal of damaged, returned, and expired products classified as hazardous waste under California law. The settlement includes $550,000 in civil penalties, $200,000 in cost recovery, and $25,000 to the Environmental Enforcement and Training Account. Nearly $78,000 will go to Sacramento County and several California cities and counties. Twenty-four city and district attorneys pursued a civil enforcement action alleging failures to identify which discarded items were used, expired, recalled, or damaged, lack of recordkeeping for tests and waste management, and improper handling and transportation of materials.
