The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office found biohazardous waste, including human tissue and prescription drugs, in trash from three county-owned hospitals, raising serious legal and ethical concerns.
Dist. Atty. Jeff Rosen emphasized the accountability of the County's health system, stating, "The public needs to know what happened, and the County will not get a free pass..."
District attorney investigators intercepted eight trash deliveries, discovering contamination in garbage compactors and indicating that more than 1,000 tons of hazardous waste were improperly disposed.
Bud Porter, a supervising deputy district attorney, confirmed the evidence was compelling, stating, "We have a pretty compelling amount of evidence" to support their claims regarding illegal dumping.
