Santa Clara County education board looks to reform amid probe - San Jose Spotlight
"We carefully reviewed the evidence and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to charge a crime,"
"The Board's 'findings' are meritless, malicious and baseless attacks, unsupported by any evidence,"
"I have no knowledge of any wrongdoing and fulfilled all of my duties with integrity and within the statutory framework of my role."
Santa Clara County Office of Education-ordered probes allege former superintendent Mary Ann Dewan engaged in contract favoritism and improper use of public and grant funds. Findings attached to the board meeting agenda accuse use of public funds for non-office purposes, awarding contracts in ways suggesting favoritism, seeking to censure certain board members, and redirecting grant money beyond original purposes. A prior federal review identified more than $135,370 of Head Start funds misallocated to non-Head Start staff and credit card purchases. County prosecutors reviewed evidence and concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge a crime. Dewan denies any wrongdoing.
