""transient""
In late July a resident saw a woman lying in a ditch near trolley tracks in Lemon Grove and called the San Diego County Sheriff's Office for a welfare check. Deputies initially drove off without checking on the woman and the resident was told she was a "transient" and to leave her alone. On Aug. 1 deputies responded, pulled the woman, identified as Irma Perez, 43, from the ditch and transported her by ambulance; she died two days later. The medical examiner will determine cause of death. The Sheriff's Office opened an administrative investigation and placed the involved deputy on administrative assignment. Perez's family believes the earlier response delay contributed to her death and has launched a GoFundMe to cover related costs.
