Power restored to over 20K PG&E customers in Saratoga after substation fire
"We know it was an equipment failure and you can actually see it from here. It's that darkened area of the substation. The fire did stay isolated in that area and that's where it self-extinguished."
"The electric clocks, you looked to see what time it is and that wasn't telling me anything. It's dead. The music? That wasn't playing. So, power's out."
"I was right in the middle of an online meeting, video conference that got cut off, obviously."
A PG&E substation in Saratoga experienced an equipment failure that produced visible smoke and a localized fire on the morning of Christmas Eve. The fire self-extinguished after burning within a darkened area of the substation, but not before knocking out power to tens of thousands of customers, affecting homes and downtown businesses. Some shops closed and residents experienced interruptions to meetings and household devices. Initial restoration estimates were midday; roughly 7,000 customers regained power within the first hour and full restoration occurred by noon. The incident followed a similar substation fire in San Francisco days earlier.
