Every October, a 3-million-gallon storage tank at the Phillips 66 refinery in Wilmington is transformed into 'the world's largest jack-o-lantern,' known as Smilin' Jack.
To prepare Smilin' Jack for Halloween, it takes over 100 gallons of paint, with eyes 18 feet high and a 73-foot-wide grin.
Phillips 66 plans to shutter the Wilmington refinery by the end of next year, leaving the future of the beloved Smilin' Jack uncertain.
The shape of the tank enables it to withstand greater pressure, further enhancing its comparison to a pumpkin for its Halloween transformation.
