Oakland rolls out speed cameras at 18 locations across city; 60-day warning period underway
"Traffic Safety is public safety. Too many Oakland families have lost loved ones due to traffic violence,"
"This is a chance for everyone to get accustomed to this new system before any fines are issued,"
"These are not surveillance cameras. These are cameras that are only used for the purpose of slowing folks down and saving lives,"
"The DOT is the one that operates this program, not law enforcement."
Oakland launched an automated speed safety camera program operating at 18 locations with a 60-day warning period. Cameras capture license plates of vehicles exceeding the posted speed by more than 11 miles per hour; no windshield or driver-face images will be taken. Data from the cameras is confidential and will be disclosed only when required by law. Verra Mobility will operate the system while the city Department of Transportation administers the program rather than law enforcement. After the warning period, fines range from $50 for 11–15 mph over to $200 for 26+ mph, with $500 for speeds over 100 mph and reduced rates for low-income drivers.
