A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll shows Xavier Becerra at 25% support, Steve Hilton at 21%, and Tom Steyer at 19%. Chad Bianco has 16% and Katie Porter has 13% in the same poll. Mark DiCamillo says the top candidates have separated from the rest despite close voter preferences. A Public Policy Institute of California poll released the prior day shows a similar pattern. DiCamillo predicts Becerra, Hilton, and Steyer will be the clear top three and that two will advance to the general election. Earlier in February, analysts suggested two Republicans could advance, but Paul Mitchell says voters increasingly shift ballots to support likely winners. With Steyer trailing Hilton by a narrow margin, speculation grows that two Democrats could reach the November ballot.
"A University of California, Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll places Democrat Xavier Becerra in the lead with 25% support, followed by Republican Steve Hilton at 21%. Democrat Tom Steyer trails closely at 19%, with Chad Bianco and Katie Porter at 16% and 13%, respectively."
