Mountain View City Council unanimously directed staff to update the city's historic preservation ordinance and its list of historic properties, aligning eligibility criteria with state and federal guidelines. The proposed process would prevent property owners from "opting off" the historic register; owners could still nominate properties and apply for removal, but the city council would make final determinations. A city consultant identified 101 potentially eligible properties that the council must review. Some property owners expressed concern that historic designation could impose permit requirements, redevelopment restrictions and financial burdens without adequate incentives.
